For further proof that good things happen to mediocre people, the most recent Alamo Drafthouse to be added to the D/FW metroplex opened last Wednesday, and, according to Google Maps, is 1.9 miles from my house (and only 1.7 miles from my office). My social life is officially over but, hey, at least I’ll be able to watch some great movies and save on gas.
Luckily, for somewhere I will be spending 95% of my free time, the facilities are incredible. Carpet from The Shining adorns the front lobby, with some great representatives from Mondo’s releases lining the hallways. The Vetted Well bar area is in the back of the building, looking out towards trees and an open patio. And the seats recline all the way back (my favorite reason for sitting in the very front row at the Downtown location), which is a nice plus.
Jason and I were lucky enough to be invited to the Grand Opening celebration for this newest addition to the Drafthouse family of theatres. Drinks and food flowed freely and it was great catching up with a lot of people we’ve gotten to know in the Dallas film community. We even got to talk to Tim League, founder of Alamo, and tell him in person how much money we’ve spent at his theatres (and on Mondo posters).
It was obviously a huge highlight for us to celebrate a theatre that will, no doubt, be an important part of our day-to-day nerding around Dallas, so we really need to thank Brad and Fons PR for the invite (and for being such a big part of this website’s success).
(And getting to see Ready Player One wasn’t too shabby either.)
