(We love Super Kaiju contributor Justin, even if he initially gave Tomb Raider 3.5 stars. We also love how passionate he is about his fandom. While we were in line meeting Jeff Goldblum or Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, Justin had … other adventures.)
Armed with a badge and one day to complete my checklist, I had just three things I definitely had to do at this year’s Fan Expo Dallas. Sue me.
- Meeting Ryan Atwood: Whether you enjoyed his work as Batman in the animated Batman: Year One or currently as Commissioner Gordon on Gotham, Ben McKenzie was at the top of my list. Greeting guests with warm hellos and a smile, it was clear he was happy to meet with everyone at Fan Expo. Including me.
With only a two second interaction, I had an important choice: do I introduce myself properly or do I let Mr. McKenzie know how much I love The O.C.?
I chose the latter.
(Editor’s Note: We are disappointed you did not come to the photo op wearing a wife-beater tee shirt, Justin.)
- Buying Archie Fine Art Prints: Morning Glories and Archie artist Joe Eisma is a mainstay at Dallas conventions and, as always, was fun to meet and talk with. The highlight was definitely getting to see some of his original drawings and prints in person. His style really pops on the page, with his work on the current run of Archie (along with Mark Waid’s words) helping to set the tone and style of the modern Archie Comics universe. These comics have especially been a partial influence for Riverdale, the very good show I gaslight all of my friends into watching.
- Working Through Some Pre-Pubescent Crush Stuff: Writer, director and former Pink power Ranger, Amy Jo Johnson was also at Fan Expo Dallas, excited to meet with her fans. Although most of the audience knew her as Kimberly Hart, some went to her panel to ask questions about her role on Felicity or even her singing career.
She was delighted to answer questions about Megazords and her mighty morphin’ days, as well as promoting her new work. When asked about how her Power Rangers work affected the trajectory of her career, she said noticed a resurgence of support and adoration from her fans who had now grown into adults. Her first feature film, The Space Between, is set to be released very soon.
As always, Fan Expo Dallas was a great time. I am excited for next year, especially if rumors that Mischa Barton will be attending turn out to be true.
