The Alamo Drafthouse has become known for their unique movie experiences.
From quote-alongs to movie parties to on-location screenings, they have perfected the art of treating the movie as a story worth living. Despite this, however, I had never been to a movie screening that was paired with axe throwing.
If Alamo had decided to do just a normal screening of American Psycho, I would have been happy to watch one of my favorite movies on the big screen. But, in typical Alamo fashion, they decided to up their game and add in some pre-movie axe throwing. Yes, axe throwing.
A few hours before the movie was set to begin, I showed up at Dallas Axe Throwing, a nondescript warehouse and was given a clear poncho and a Patrick Bateman business card. After signing waivers (just in case someone chopped off an ear or something), we learned from an instructor (a professional axe thrower) on how to throw axes. For an hour-and-a-half afterwards, a bunch of movie nerds were just throwing axes at wooden targets trying to find their inner Patrick Bateman.
Some of us even stayed in our clear ponchos, which surprisingly didn’t get in the way. Lesson learned.
After we all were tired of throwing axes (it took awhile), we made our way to the theater, ordered some popcorn and watched American Psycho. It was a pretty rad time, got us in the “right mindset” to watch the movie, and I’m glad Alamo put it together…
I’m off to return some video tapes and make a reservation for Dorsia.
