A Fun Bloodbath: Victor Crowley (Review)

Filmed in secret and announced to a sold-out crowd at the Hatchet 10th Anniversary Event, the fourth film in the Hatchet franchise, Victor Crowley has now been unleashed by fan-favorite director / creator / star Adam Green.

Victor Crowley has already been shown at some film festivals and is currently doing a theater tour across the US before its inevitable nationwide release. I got lucky and was able to attend the tour’s first stop in Dallas, with director Adam Green doing a Q&A after the film.

The first 3 Hatchet movies are fun, blood-soaked slashers and Victor Crowley is no exception. Pure fan-service in all the best ways, the latest installment in the series is more comedy-driven than its predecessors, while still ending up as a fun thrill ride on its own merit.

It picks up years after the first three movies. Its main character Andrew, who had survived Victor Crowley’s hatchet, is now making TV appearances to promote his tell-all book about the experience. It has a definite Scream vibe, self-aware of itself and the genre it lives in. While doing a press tour, Andrew’s plane crashes in the same woods he once escaped Crowley’s hatchet and the slashing (and splatter) kicks back in. It’s a fun bloodbath and a perfect way to kick off this Halloween month.

During the Q&A, Adam Green pleaded with the audience to talk about the movie spoiler-free and I will honor that request, mainly for one death scene which, when talked about, would probably ruin the fun. It is now one of my favorite deaths in a horror movie … and, when you see it, you will know what I mean.

Fans of Adam Green and the Hatchet franchise are going to have a fun time watching Crowley rip apart his victims. And, judging by the cheering crowd after the movie, I think Victor Crowley will continue to live on as a fan favorite in the horror community.

The film is still touring, with Adam Green making appearances at some of the stops. If you get a chance, definitely check it out. It’s a fun time at the movies, especially during October.
