Dallas Comic Show is a recent addition to the D/FW convention calendar but also quickly becoming one of the best. This installment was no exception, especially with actors from Star Wars and Twin Peaks. Lines were short, prices were low and Super Kaiju moderated its first weekend ever of convention panels. Win, win, win.
The weekend kicked off at the Alamo Drafthouse on Friday evening, with a special 10th Anniversary screening of 30 Days of Night. I hosted the pre-movie Q&A with creator / writer Steve Niles, who was an absolute delight. We went through the history of the comic and the movie, taking questions from enthusiastic fans from the crowd.
Jason and I packed our bags Saturday morning and headed back down the highway with two missions in mind: meet Boba Fett (legendary stuntman Dickey Beer) and talk Twin Peaks with Andy (Harry Goaz) and Lucy (Kimmy Robertson). The early morning crowds were bustling, filled with fans, cosplayers and vendors.
Dickey Beer is a Star Wars legend, not only appearing as the infamous mercenary on the Skiff in Return of the Jedi, but also as a Rebel Soldier, a Scout Trooper and Barada. He has been a stunt man for years, working alongside Harrison Ford (in Last Crusade) and Pierce Brosnan as 007. He was full of great stories and I am just glad I didn’t get visibly nervous or violently ill while interviewing Boba Fett.
Even with the recent (great) revival, the two stars of Twin Peaks, making a very rare convention appearance, had small lines … it took us no time at all to shake their hands and get our Mondo records signed. Kimmy Robertson, especially, was gracious and kind, texting Jason (!) some pictures of her and her on-screen beau, as well as being as much of a delight as you would expect Lucy to be in real life.
We left the convention on Saturday feeling giddy, a true measure of a great day at a convention.
Sunday morning found us back at the Richardson Civic Center but, this time, on a completely different mission. I was contacted to moderate the rest of the convetion’s panels for the weekend, which included comic artist and actor Kevin Grevioux (the creator of the Underworld franchise), WWE legend Kevin Nash (also star of Magic Mike and The Punisher), and Tank Girl herself, Lori Petty. The crowds brought a good energy and great questions and we were able to string together three great interviews.
Dallas Comic Show was some of the most fun (and stress-free) experiences we’ve had at a convention in a while. Make sure to mark the next one on your calendar and come say hi.
