Regular readers to the site should not be surprised about how much we love the Dallas Comic Show! Every event gets better and better, growing from a long history of great Dallas conventions. From commissioning some of our favorite artists to meeting some of the most iconic Twin Peaks characters, we always have a blast.
Mark Walters (and BigFanBoy.com) is putting on two more installments of Dallas Comic Show this year, with the first, Fantasy Festival, happening this weekend at the Premier Event Center in Lewisville. We’ll, of course, be making the trek, armed with our Mondo Twin Peaks vinyl and Attack the Block poster.
Here are just 5 highlights from a really unique weekend schedule that we’ll be definitely checking out. Let us know if you’re going and we’ll see you out there!
Friday, August 24:
8:00PM: Attack the Block Screening (with Terry Notary)
While the convention doesn’t officially start until the next day, we’re getting in the Dallas Comic Show mindset tonight by attending a very special screening with mo-cap legend Terry Notary, who is introducing Attack the Block at the Alamo Drafthouse Denton. Attack the Block, the world’s first real introduction to FN-2187 himself, John Boyega, is a sci-fi classic and one of Super Kaiju’s personal favorites. I’ve never actually seen it on the big screen, so I can’t wait!
Tickets are still available, somehow, but definitely come out for this … it should be awesome. (Especially if we somehow get to learn how to walk like Rocket from Planet of the Apes.)
Saturday, August 25:
2:00PM: Bernie Wrightson and Dave Stevens Tribute
The comic community has lost two giants (with long-time DCS guest, and co-creator of Swamp Thing, Mr. Wrightson passing away last year) and it will be both sobering but also so uplifting to celebrate their incredible contributions to the medium we love so much. Panelists include James O’Barr, Tim Bradstreet, Mark Nelson and Bernie’s wife, Liz.
3:00PM: Sherilyn Fenn Q&A
What can we say? We’re a sucker for Twin Peaks.
Last year’s Twin Peaks guests were a real delight and I’m sure this will be no exception. We’ll also be bringing our Twin Peaks memorabilia for an autograph, which is filling up rather nicely with some big names from that sleepy little Washington town. (Also, I might have to ask a Gilmore Girls question or two, so let’s just hold our breath and cross our fingers that it doesn’t happen.)
4:00PM: Superman IV: The Quest for Peace LIVE Commentary with Mark Pillow and Mark Walters
I really don’t know what to expect with this one, but I really can’t wait for what will probably be one of the most unique panels ever. Featuring a very rare appearance from Nuclear Man himself, I’m sure there’s going to be a ton of great stories that come out of this.
Sunday, August 26:
1:00PM: Mark Ryan Q&A
Mark Ryan seems to be one of the best guys on the convention scene and I’m sure his Q&A will reflect that. Whether you have a burning question about the Transformers Cinematic Universe or Black Sails, you won’t want to miss this.
Again, we always look forward to seeing what Dallas Comic Show has up their sleeves! We’ll see you all this weekend … stop us and we’ll hook you up with some of our newest sticker packs (we’ll be the ones in Super Kaiju shirts, lugging around boxes of comic books).
